Legal petition and the prayer at the end of it

Dear all ,

how important is the prayer at the end of a legal petition? I have filed a petition in the family court under section 12 with 13. At the end of the petition, under the heading prayer, only a dissolution is mentioned. Will this render the nullity section invalid? In case of any objection, can I argue that prayer is only a formality, concluding the memo in a polite way and that quoting the right section is more important? My lawyer says that we can amend the petition anytime although in nearly two years nothing has been done. Kindly help.
