HRD minister lays emphasis on reform in legal education

HRD Minister Kapil Sibal laid emphasis on reform in legal education in the country.

Mr Sibal, also an eminent lawyer, was speaking during the inauguration of New Cubicles for Lawyers in the Supreme Court.

Mr Sibal and the Bar Council of India(BCI), a statutory body controlling and regulating legal education in the country, have serious differences. The BCI is strongly opposed to the intervention by the HRD Minister in the affairs of legal education.

Mr Sibal has also been advocating the entry of foreign advocates in the country, while the BCI wants it on reciprocal basis and is of the view that other countries should also permit Indian lawyers to practice in those countries whose lawyers want to practice in India.

The State Bar Council and various associations of lawyers across the country are against the entry of lawyers of other countries in India.
