An inquest report, conducted under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), primarily investigates the circumstances of an unnatural death. While the police initiate and prepare the initial report, it is done in the presence of an Executive Magistrate. The report's purpose is to ascertain the cause of death and whether it was unnatural, not to detail assaults or identify perpetrators, which falls under the broader police investigation.
An inquest report is made primarily to look into the causes of unnatural death. In the case of unnatural death, the circumstances have to be examined. The report that is made by the police under section 174(1) of the criminal procedure code, 1973 is not exhaustive. It contains in it only the first impression of the dead body. The police officer conducting the investigation is supposed to prepare the report.
