Possibility of doing 2 degrees simultaneously

Guest (Querist) 30 August 2011 This query is : Resolved
I am currently doing MBA through distance education of a well known university. I am thinking about doing MSc in Mathematics because I like Mathematics very much.

I would like to know whether it is legally possible within India to do 2 such degrees simultaneously, that is, to do one course full-time and the other through distance learning and their course periods overlap fully or partially. Thank you

It is OK if the two degrees are from two different universities, say one from a regular college affiliated to a university and the other from a distance education university.

legally you cannot take 2 degrees simultaneously.

Thank you for your reply Srinivas. Yes I am trying to do both degrees from 2 different universities, one through distance learning and for the other i will join another university as full-time student. You said it is OK if that is the case. But I would like to know whether there will be any future problems related to legality and validity of the above-mentioned degrees obtained at same time. Will both degrees stand valid and be accepted by employers and other universities according to Indian Law?

Thank you for your reply Rajkumar. I mentioned the context in which I am trying for those 2 degrees. Moreover, one degree will be finished midway through the other one. Will it still be not legal?

Still it shall not be legal and can create various problems for you. You are perusing one of these degrees as full time student so how is it legally possible to take up another simultaneously may be from two different universities.

Rajkumar Sir, As I have mentioned earlier that one degree is through distance learning so that I can study at my own pace. The other one I am thinking about joining is through another university full-time. I should tell you that both universities are UGC approved. So what I am telling is it's possible for me to do both. As a legal expert, you can tell more about legalities and various problems this situation will create in future. I am eager to know

For doing a degree you must produce the TC of your previous institution.

You will be having only one TC. So, you can not do two degrees simultaneously.

let it be what it is two degrees in same year are not valid ,if earned by some manipulation one of them has to be suppressed life long and can not be utilized, and granting university can cancel it as and when comimg to its knowledge.

Do you think DPM is a degree?
girish shringi (Expert) 02 September 2011
Even if its not the degree but its a diploma i.e. also been given by the University.

one can take 101 based on his efficacy and can privately use his knowledge so earned ,but when comes to a qualification of formal claim,he may face forfeiture of having more than 1 is the discussion here.

with due respect to all experts, i would like to submit that the two degree is valid, if one is from regular and one is from distance, in accordance with the UGC guidelines. There is specific guidelines in this context. Moreover, if the author is not satisfied with the discussion, the best alternate is to go for RTI.

Dear Raja,

Since distance education is meant to be taken up in your liesure time (not along with any regular course), unless byelaws of the regular course providing university prohibit simultaneous taking up of a distance course, both the degrees would be valid. The concerned degrees would clearly indicate whether course was a regular one or through distance education.

The condition of two degees simultaneously apply for two regular courses at a time where a student is required to attend classes of both the courses regularly, which is not possible for him to do.

So, better check the byelaws of the university/college of which you want to pursue a regular course.
