Dear Hadasan.

Virtually, there is no difference between a petition and application. In the context of law, a petition is a formal application in writing made to a court for judicial action for something that lies in its jurisdiction. For other purposes, a petition is a written application addressed to a superior, or to a person or body in authority, soliciting some favour, right or mercy for redressal of some wong or grievance. In other words, it is a document codifying formal written request.

On the other hand, the term "application" is an inclinaion to apply, a petition or request. the act of applying or putting to use.

So, in layman's language we can call a petition, as application also.
