To carryout onion business

Sir, I proposed to do whole-sale Onion business in Chennai.For that I will setup a whole sale depot in Chennai. To do that business we will import Onion from Maharashtra once in 3 days, lorry load of 15 tons or 21 tons. In this regard to carryout this Onion business, and to bring it from Maharashtra,does any license mandatory or must for me. Please guide me and clear my doubt. On of my friend said to bring lorry load of Onion, no license is required. Please clear my doubt. D.J

1. State Govt. from time-to-time promulgates directions about certain essential commodities, which are then restricted for trading, transporting, hoarding and so on ....

2. ON SECOND thoughts, better to procure your Onions from Sri Lanka, rather than from Maharashtra, since Onion is already over priced at retail price of nearly 80/- per kg.

3. On THIRD thoughts, better to procure the Onions from Sri Lanka and sell them in Maharashtra at 20/- per kg.

4. You are proposing to take away nearly 2500 tonnes of Maharashtra's Onion, which will further raise the retail price of Onion in Maharashtra.

What type of license you are talking?

Permission to bring onion not required. Local licenses for trading, dealing in agricultural products etc. are required.

Any citizen of this country has the fundamental right carry out any benign business of his choice unless there is any restriction validly imposed by an Act of the Parliament. There, certainly, is no Onion Act.

However, some provisions of the Essential Commodities Act may be applicable. Please ascertain.
