Hello
I want to know whether a man can legally compel his wife to contribute equal amount towards household expenses.In a marriage ,is a man legally bound to contribute some amount for his wife's maintenance even if she is earning?

Answer to both your question is Yes.
Wife who is earning is supposed to share household expenses with husband. To say compel her to contribute seems harsh but asking her to contribute is more decent way.
Secondly, even if wife is earning she can claim and get maintenance from husband for the amount which in short for her reasonable expenses that she's unable to afford out of her earning.

No is the only possible answer to both your questions.
No law of the land compels any husband or wife that he or she should contribute or contribute any prescribed percentage to the household expenses during the subsistence of the marriage if the other is managing things of his or her income. Such things are determined by social norms but not by legal means.
After separation each one has a duty to maintain the other if the other is penniless.
However social norms prescribe that each one should contribute according to his or her ability as marriage is a partnership social institution.
