Transfer of property

A acquired a property through a gift deed from his father.  While partitioning the family property among the members of his family, he took up the position that he is not bound to distribute this property as this is not an ancestral  or inherited  one.and he can  sell this property at his convenience or gift the same to one of the members of family according to his choice.  Whether this position is correct during his life time ? Please enlighten on this aspect .
