yes, they can sue school if student is seriously injured.

Dear Mr.EEWACS,
There is no prohibition estopping anyone in suing the school authority/ies but logically speaking it is a hypothetical question/situation. Two things which comes to my mind is as to whether the school authority/ies had neglected anything or was there any actual or implied disclaimer that inspite of all precautions if in case the students gets injured the authorities shall not be responsible. Eventually factual matrix are going to count in right earnest.
