Previous and new land owner

The previous owner of the land had allowed neighbors to walk or drive over his land in a shortcut and this has been going on for say a decade. Can a new owner of the same land stop them now from using the shortcut?

What purpose the purchaser purchased the land? for his own or for the purpose of neighbor using as pathway? New purchaser could stop the action by way of fencing the property
