Paying expenses to defendant (witness)

I want to call the defendant in my lawsuit to appear as a witness. (I am plaintiff) . Do I have to pay expenses to the defendant to appear as witness?  Also, if I serve the summons on his advocate/counsel what is the format to use? Can I use the same format which the court bailiff uses?
