You have to apply in the government gazette for name change and a gazette notification will be published as proof of your name change.  You also have to compulsorily advertise in newspaper (english/local language) about the name change.  These will form the proof of name change.

 Dear Krishna,

I changed my wife's surname while applying for renewal of passport. They just had a look at the marriage certificate and the affidavit given by us.

I haven't published in local newspaper.

Please let me know if it creates any issue in future? All her bank a/cs ,pan card bear the old surname while new ones such as passport and driving licence have the new name.

Regards

Sridhar

Dear sridhar,

Only official gazette notification is the officially regarded and permissible method of changing name.  I dont understand how you have changed the name of your wife in passport and driving licence.   There may be future complications in view of this.

1) affidavit to be given first ; and on that basis, your name will be changed.

2) after affidavit; you have to advertise in newspaper stating the affidavit.

official gazette  is different thingh. it is used for govt. notification.

Dear Mr.Arup & Mr.Krishna,

To my mind the first thing is to get an Advertisement in at least two Newspapers then get an affidavit by first class Magistrate and for all practical purposes this is more than enough.

Getting published in Gazette might be practical but still is optional not compulsory.

I hope the issue gets clarified now.

Thanks and best regards

Hi,

i have changed my name to married name in passport and other documents through a notarised affidavit. do i need to get my married name published in newspapers and then the gazette. Is this compulsory? I dont have more copies of the original affidavit. Please advise.

Thanks

After affidavit; you may advertise in newspaper, mentioning the affidavit. No need of publishing full affidavit. In 3/4 lines you may publish that, - it was your previous name D/o,...  ..., henceforth you will be known as...... (the present name) by virtue of the affidavit dated ....

Check any newspaper, you will see their many of such advertisements.

Official gazette  is different thingh. it is used for govt. notification only. Not for general public.

Mr Arup, thanks for your reply. I had made the affidavit for name change in passport. now i do not have the original copy but only a photocopy. can i quote the same affidavit or do i need to get one more done and then advertise. How does this advertisement help? Also, should i mention both father and husband name in the advertisement. Please advise.
