- no defination is there.
it depends upon the state govt to recomend the sc or st to the perliament. thereafter perliament takes the suitable steps.
no specific criteria is there.

- So far i know, there is no defination for sc & st provided in constitution. how a perticular caste or sub caste & a tribe - to be scheduled, given in the arts 244 & 244a.

Dear friends,
Art. 244 and 244-A of the Constitution provide for scheduled and tribal areas and not for scheduled castes and tribes.
Definition of SC has been given under art. 366 (24) and that of ST under art. 366 (25) of the Constitution .
For complete legislattive information about SC one has to go through Art. 341, 366(24), and the Constitution (Scheduled castes) Order, 1950 ;
and about ST one has to go through Art. 342, 366(25) and the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 .
It is Presidential Order , 1950 which contains the State wise lists of castes and tribes .
