In my considered view, it is not legally forbidden to peak into your wife's phone, however, it totally depends on the sphere of privacy which you wife defines.

In fact, this is also an indicator of mutual trust. As your profile name suggests, I believe, such mutual trust in not present at all and that is why you found a reason to peak into her phone and she is against, to allow you to do that!
