How to get thumb impression extract for specific date range?

I have applied for extract of thumb impression register under RTI providing a date range of 3 days (i.e. between Jan 10-13 1935). But the subregistrar has rejected the application stating that only if i provide a document id/volume id the information can be provided!

Since the thumb imprerssion register is covered by RTI and is written serially by document no. it should be simple to extract pages corresponding to a date range? I dont see why the subregistrar is insisting it can only be accessed via a document no/volume no.

I really need this to search for some ancestral property since the index has been altered and the document can be in any of the volumes in use at that time period
