Housing cooperative society

Hello

I was looking at buying a site in a society formed for central, telecom and IT employees. The society was formed recently and it is said this was formed by a group who have experience running such societies before(employees from central govt). Before investing in the property I wanted to make sure that this society is genuine and that I am not cheated of the money I invest, if in the worst case I do not get the promised plot.

1. How can I verify that the society is registered with the govt. Is there any government organisation which keeps a track of registered societies and which can check this given the register number(I have the register number for the society)

2. Also, what documents/checks do I need to do when investing in such schemes.

I have heard a lot of negative reviews and scams from such housing societies and hence wanted to verify. Any inputs on this will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
