Greetings!

Guruvayoor Devaswon Act manages the famous Sri Krishna Temple in Guruvayoor. It manages the state affairs of the temple across the state.

The recent decision of the board to donate Rs. 5 crore for the CM’s COVID-19 relief fund, from the Guruvayoor Devaswom Board has triggered a controversy and a legal dispute has been filed in the Kerala High Court.

The contention of the petitioner is that the board does not have the power to give away the money under two provisions of the Act-

Section 11- which states that no movable or immovable property belonging to the Devaswom over the value of Rs. 5000 can be sold, pledged or otherwise alienated unless it is sanctioned by the commissioner.

Section 27- which states that the income of the temple and their properties should only be used for temple purposes.

Hope you find this relevant.

Regards,

Karishma Yadav
