Fatherinlaw not returned money

I had given money through check and transfer to FatherInlaw and later on he did not return my money.

Now, the dispute is going on b/w my wife & me.

If I call to Police and complaint then will I get back?

Please assist and let me procedure.

If you have valid proof for the transaction file a recovery suit against him in the court
