Document not despatched by a govt office can be produced in evidence

A party has produced in evidence a document obtained  from a Govt Office that does not near any despatch numbers  . Is this document  still a  reliable document for Court

Quick Summary
This discussion explores the admissibility of government documents in court when they lack a despatch number. While a despatch number isn't strictly required, the key factors for reliability are the presence of an official signature and seal. Participants are seeking legal opinions on whether such documents can still be considered reliable evidence.

It does not require a despatch number for a produced document. However, what is the opinion of your lawyer in this matter?

If the document bears signature of authority and seal then it is admissible in evidence.

I endorse the opinion and advise learned senior expert Mr. Bhartesh Goyal.

The point in issue is the signature of author the letter / document and not the despatch number.

What is the opinion / advise of the lawyer engaged by you, if any ?

Thanks for your reply,

As per regulations of a document is not Despatched it means a formal delivery to the recipient has not materialised , and the paper officially is still with the Deaprtment. Such a non-desoatched document implies that the it is still under process and no final shape has yet been given .

All worthy advisers may please advise on the above .

Dr. J C Vashista (Advocate )     27 July 2026

It is (service of the subject document) to be proved by the party exhibiting, if doubted/ objected or questioned in cross-examination.

Otherwise, it stands proved.
