Distribution of ESIC cards begins

Shri Mallikarjun Kharge, Honorable Minister for Labour & Employment, Govt. of India will release the first set of ‘PEHCHAN’ Identity Cards for distribution to ESIC beneficiaries on 25th August, 2009 at 3.00 P.M. in a glittering ceremony at Ambedkar Bhavan in Bangalore.

"With this card, an insured person under ESIC and family members can step into any of the ESI dispensaries or hospitals to avail treatment or can also use the card to get other services from ESIC branches," he said.

One card would be issued to the insured person and another to the family members, he said.The project is being called as Pehchan and 2.40 crore smart cards would be prepared under the scheme in place of existing paper based cards.

The IT roll-out Plan named 'Project Panchdeep', was then assigned to Wipro Infotech under BOOT (Build, Own, Operate and Transfer) model. Adequate safety measures have been provided in the card to prevent it from being forged, the official said.A unique number will be assigned to each member so that he can continue using the Card even in case of a change in job.

WHAT IS PROJECT “PEHCHAN”

Pehchan is part of  the five stages of the ESI Project “PANCH-DEEP”. The five parts of this project are Pehchan, Milap, Pashan, Dhanwantri and Pragati.”

The other four components include Milap for all services related to provisioning network and bandwidth;

Pashan for all services related to hardware for Data Centre, Disaster Recovery, desktops/PCs/Laptops and middleware;

Dhanwantri for all services related to hospitals and dispensaries; and

Pragati for all services related to ERP modules. All these services would be delivered across 2220 locations spanning the country.

Communication further says that all the employers who have more than 100 workers will have this facility in their premises so as to minimize loss of man hours.  The photographs of workers will be with their family members and they will also register the finger prints of the workers.
