Damages in defamation case

Can anyone tell me any good judgements on how to ascertain damages to be awarded in a defamation suit? What are the factorrs which need to be considered?

Also is there any judgement which can manage to prove to the court that when a statement is on the face of it defamatory,there is no need to adduce evidence regarding actual loss of reputation
