Each and every case is different, so there is no hard and fast rule to crass a witness; it depends on the evidence in chief. But there are some simple rules --
1. First you must deny each and every allegation made by the witness.
2. Find out the contradictions with the statement recorded u/s 161 or 164 Cr.P.C with the depositions made by the witness.
3. Point out the contradictions and request the court to record it.
4. Give some suggestions.

2. Ask technical questions about the case diary etc.
