If you mean “How long does a civil case take in India?”, there is no fixed duration applicable to every civil proceeding. The time depends upon the nature of the suit, number of parties, service of summons, interim applications, evidence, adjournments, workload of the court, and appeals.
Broadly, a civil suit proceeds through filing and registration, service of summons, written statement, framing of issues, evidence of the plaintiff, evidence of the defendant, final arguments, judgment, and decree. Execution proceedings may subsequently be required if the decree is not voluntarily complied with.
Although the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 (CPC) prescribes timelines for particular procedural stages—for example, filing of the written statement—these do not mean that the entire suit must necessarily conclude within a specified number of months or years.
If your question instead means “How many stages are there in civil procedure?”, tell me, and I can explain the complete stages of a civil suit from institution to execution in about 150 words.
