Azhagiri is not appearing in court

Madurai District Collector U Sagayam has issued a fresh summon to Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister and senior DMK leader M K Azhagiri and his family members, asking them to appear before him with regard to a complaint over the alleged destruction of irrigation channels for the construction of an engineering college.

Officials said today, Mr Sagayam has set a deadline for Azhagiri, his wife Kanthi Alagiri and son Durai Dayanidhi to appear before him in person or through a representative on April 20.

The DC has called them in his office, along with relevant documents to explain as to why further action should not be pursued as per law over the alleged violation of government norms in the construction of Dhaya Engineering College at Sivarakottai in the district.

This is the third summon issued to the Union Minister and his family members, on the college row.

The minister and his family members are the trustees of M K Alagiri Educational Trust which owns the college. The trust has committed offences under Tamil Nadu Irrigation Works (Construction of Field Bodies) Act 1959, Tamil Nadu Farmers Management of Irrigation System Act 2000 and Eviction of Encroachment Act 2007, the notice read.
