Are email intimation enough for taking legal proceedings

Sir,

Background: I have taken contract from an interior designer for wood work in our house. He has given a Estimate of Rs.2.50 Lakhs in the beginning. Now the works are completed but he is demanding for Rs.2.65 Laks, quoting some additional works done which is not acceptable for use. We have paid him Rs.2.35 lakhs for which we have bills. we are ready to pay him remaining 15k, but he is demanding 30k.

Now

We have not accpeted/ signed any contract for the higher amount. He has sent a mail demanding for more amount else will take legal proceedings. Are emails enough for intimating us regarding the same?

look into the terms and conditions mentioned in the contract.there would be some clause where it would be mentioned that the final estimated amount might increase by some percentage owing to certain conditions  and things like that.if any such clause is found and if he is abiding by the terms then you are bound to pay him.if possible attach a copy of the agreement for better advice
