Working hours

(Querist) 08 December 2009 This query is : Resolved 
On of the factory licensed under the factories Act wants to convert the working hours from 8 hours per shift(3 shift in a day and 5 days working in a week) to 12 hours per shift & shift per day and 4 days working in a week).
Is it possible?
What should be the procedure?

according to section 51 of factories act 1948, No adult workers shall be required or allowed to work in a factory for more than forty-eight hours in any week.

no adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in a factory for more than nine hours in any day :
Provided that, subject to the previous approval of the Chief inspector, the daily maximum hours specified in this section may be exceeded in order to facilitate the change of shifts.

It is not possible and not open as defined by Rama Mohan. Factories Act clearly defines that no worker can be forced to work more than nine hours per day out of which one hour shall be rest period so factory management cannot change the pattern within the framework of law.
