Even an FIR can be altered For example in cases of suspicious death the FIR is registered under Sec.174 Cr.P.C. On investigation,if the police conclude that it is a case of murder,the FIR can be altered into 302 I.P.C. Similarly when a case case is regsitered under Sec.307 IPC for attempr to murder and subsequently the victim dies without responding to medical treatment the FIR can be altered into 302 IPC. or supplementary FIR is required. A police officer canno’t amend the FIR or the chargesheet.

There is no question of alteration in FIR. Sec. 174 does not contemplate FIR. It lays down procedure to be followed by police on receipt of information of death by suicide etc. If it transpires after inquiry that the case is not of suicide or accidental death but is of murder, then FIR has to be registered for offence u/s 302. In the case of death after registration of offence u/s 307, separate FIR is not required to be given. IO simply adds charge u/s 302 under intimation to the court. It is not alteration of FIR.
