Section : Short title, extent, application and commencement.

THE WATER (PREVENTION AND CONTROL OF POLLUTION) CESS ACT, 1977 ACT NO. 36 OF 1977 [7th December, 1977.] An Act to provide for the levy and collection of a cess on water consumed by persons carrying on certain industries and by local authorities, with a view to augment the resources of the Central Board and the State Boards for the prevention and control of water pollution constituted under the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974. BE it enacted by Parliament in the Twenty-eighth Year of the Republic of India as follows:- 1.Short title, extent, application and commencement. (1) This Act may be called the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977. (2) It extends to the whole of India except the State of Jammu and Kashmir. (3) Subject to the provisions of sub-section (2), it applies to all the States to which the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 applies and the Union territories. (4) It shall come into force on such date as the Central Govern- ment may, by notification in the Official Gazette, appoint.
