HC Confronts Activist On Bias Charge 12 Feb 2009, 0348 hrs IST, TNN Text: PATNA: The Patna High Court on Wednesday asked social activist Suman Lal on what basis could she say that it was biased and motivated while hearing a PIL against state employees' strike. The PIL had submitted that the employees' strike was illegal as per a Supreme Court ruling as their services fall under the category of essential services. The court has since ordered the employees to call off the strike. A division bench comprising acting Chief Justice Chandramauli Kumar Prasad and Justice Shyam Kishore Sharma confronted Lal while hearing the matter on contempt proceedings against her. In her reply to the court's showcause earlier, Lal said she also sent letters to the Prime Minister and President of India apprising them of her opinion and the grave situation in the state due to continued strike of the state government employees. The judges asked her what was the purpose behind writing letters to the Prime Minister and President who could not dismiss permanent judges of high court. "It is due to our intervention that the strike was called off," one of the judges said. The judges maintained the court would uphold its constitutional duty to deal with this contempt matter. For, a social activist does not have the right to abuse anybody.
