Girl In Illegal Detention For 8 Months 10 Feb 2009, 1918 hrs IST, TNN Text: MYSORE: After eight months in illegal detention in the house of a government servant, a minor girl was rescued here. The Mysore district Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has sent summons to the couple that adopted the girl and the person who sent her here. Members of the committee met at the state home for girls, where the 12-year-old girl is housed, here on Tuesday. They lambasted the district police for their inaction against the couple despite the girl's complaints. However, H D Kote SI Kumar had a different tale to tell. He claimed that as the girl, who was adopted six months ago, urged the couple to send her to Harihara, they brought her to the station last week. She was with the police. However, to a query, Kumar said the girl did not complain against anyone and hence no action was taken against the couple. CWC member Baburaj told `The Times of India' that the girl is an orphan and was under the care of an NGO based in Harihara of Davangere district. She was studying in 5th standard when she was brought to Mysore by a government servant residing in the Heggadadevana Kote taluk of Mysore district. She said despite doing all household chores, she was beaten up, tortured, served less food and was detained inside the house for several months. Last week, she escaped from the house. She was found collecting money to reach Harihara, when a group of taxi drivers rescued her and brought her to the H D Kote police station. Later, she was sent to the state home for girls, said Baburaj. Terming the adoption as illegal, the committee member said every adoption should be done through the government recognized agencies. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the girl was not adopted legally, he said. However, a person, guilty of causing mental or physical suffering, may be imprisoned for six months or fined or both under Juvenile Justice Act 2000.
