Delhi HC Pulls Up DCP In Maid's Trafficking Case 1/23/2009 The Delhi High Court has pulled up Delhi police for laxity in probe of maids trafficking case in a petition filed by an NGO. The placement agencies face the allegations of trafficking of maids, lured by promises of placement as domestic helps. Hearing the petition, a division bench of Justices A P Shah and Sanjeev Khanna asked DCP north west N S Bundela, who was present in the court, ‘Have you taken legal advice before registering a serious case like this?’ DCP Bundela submitted before the court that legal advice was taken over the telephone before the registration of the FIR on the charges of criminal breach of trust against the placement agencies. When the bench asked for name of the officer, he fumbled and failed to answer. Annoyed with the reply, the bench has summoned the Commissioner for his personal appearance in the case on January 28. Appearing for the petitioners, H S Phoolka submitted that the case also attracted various other sections of the IPC, like the charges of trafficking, kidnapping and exploitation of juveniles, whereas the police has registered a case only under Section 406 of IPC (criminal breach of trust). He added that ‘this is a deliberate attempt on the part of police to let a culprit go scot-free.’ UNI
