Ace lawyer signs up, waits for Kasab’s nod

Mumbai: The former barrister from Lincoln’s Inn sends his vakalatnama to police chief If everything moves ahead as per what lawyer K B N Lam has planned, Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, the lone captured terrorist, will soon get an advocate. Lam has sent a signed vakalatnama to the commissioner of Mumbai Police awaiting Kasab’s consent on it. The onus now lies on Kasab whether to accept or not to accept the lawyer. “I have sent my vakalatnama to the commissioner of Mumbai Police and am awaiting a response from the police if Kasab has really accepted my vakalatnama. Even though I have shown my willingness, it depends upon Kasab if he really wants an Indian lawyer, or rather, if he wants a lawyer at all,” said Lam. “I just feel that every accused has a right to legal representation. It is not for the people or the police to decide who is guilty, as it is the court’s job,” he added. Amidst major uproar over the issue of Kasab getting a lawyer, at least four lawyers including Lam, had expressed their willingness to defend him in court.
