Dr. Ashwani Kumar took over as the Minister of Law & Justice here today from his predecessor Shri Salman Khursheed. Speaking to media persons he spelt out his priorities as the new Law & Justice Minister. Dr. Ashwani Kumar emphasized the need to strengthen the institution of constitutional democracy and stated that only through the adherence to the Rule of Law can we ensure order and stability in the society. He said that an effective legal architecture for facilitating the fight against corruption was a high priority of the UPA government and that an effective and credible Lokpal Bill will require a broad political consensus for which he will make all efforts. Judicial reforms for reducing the backlog of cases will receive top priority. Dr. Kumar said that key legislations will be piloted by the Ministry during the coming session of the Parliament. He emphasized the need of benign and effective laws and cautioned against aggressive implementation of laws.
Later the new Minister of Law & Justice met with senior officers of the Ministry and took stock of the work going on in the Ministry.
