Payment of professional tax

Sir/Madam,

I am a practicing lawyer with 3 years of practice having got my sanad in february 2009. I have been issued a notice by the professional tax department to pay professional tax. Now when i went to enquire about the same they say i being an individual practioner i need to pay professional tax of (Rs 7,500/-)for the F Y 2009 -10, 2010-11, 2011-12 with waiver given for the first year of 2008-09. Plus i need to pay Rs 2010/- for the penalties, with overall total being 9510/-. Most of my fellow advocate friends have asked me to ignore the notice.

Pls let me know whether the department is right in calculating these taxes. Can i ignore the notice or if they are wrong how can i challenge this notice.

Regards,
