Correction to your reply if I may:

Since Feb. 2006 all marriages irrespective of Religion have been made compulsory to get Registered as per given directive of Hon'ble SC to Central Govt.
The court felt that this ruling was necessitated by the need of time as certain unscrupulous husbands altogether deny marriage leaving their spouses in the lurch, be it for seeking maintenance, custody of children or inheritance of property.

It is mandatory to register the marriage.

Registration of marriage is a proof, it can be used when question arises about the marriage.

Status of other wives will be just that of kept. The children begot by such marriages would be illegitimate. None of them (wife herself or the children of such wedlock) have any right in the ancestral property.

Hmmm, Registration of marriages is mandatory, but that doesnot mean unregistered marriages are illegal or void on this ground alone.

Many states including Tamilnadu has enacted compulsory marriage registration Act. So it is necessary to register a marriage after 1998.
