One thing as a friend of the victim that you have to take care is once he is out of danger have him counselled with the family counsellor and come up with the pros and cons. Once you have this ready this will help you in taking a right firm decision on whether to go ahead with this girl or not.

If your friend's decision is not to leave this girl then he may try by applying the Sec 9 HMA 1955 which is called Restitution of Conjugal Rights asking the wife to come back and start conjugal relationship by this way the girl side will be aware of this legal marriage and may come up with the negotiation of Mutual Consent Divorce and then you can take it further....

Secondly, if your friend by then after counselling decides not to take her back the only way out here is to convince her and her family for the Mutual Consent Divorce and come out of the mess.

may her family is pressing her not to go with you and playing games so first make your friend come out from the hospital or you go and talk to her personally and make her realise what wrong she is doing and settle the matter or go legally
