Thumb impression in lieu of signature

Dear Sir/s,

My mother is 84 years old who could put her signature earlier on legal documents. But now due to her old age and health, poor sight and shivering hands she can't sign and instead prefers to put her thumb impression instead of signature.

Does my mother have to prepare an affidavit stating that she cannot sign due to old age and would prefer to put her thumb impression on all legal documents in the future.

If yes, what are the documents required for the affidavit. Do I have to take a certificate from the doctor stating that she cannot sign due to old age.

My neighbour has confused me. Please guide me.

Thanks in advance to all experts.

Prashant
