Criminal Defamation in India

Hi. I am fighting for a public cause where the fraud corporate has filed a criminal defamation case on me and got the process issued with magistrate. Is there any risk of jail in criminal defamation cases? Do people get punished at all under IPC for defamation?

You need to give more details about the case without which nothing much can be told, simply suggesting something will be like reading your palm and doing palmistry.

Under Section 500 IPC, punishment for defamation is SI for 2 years or fine or both.

It is very difficult to get conviction under Section 499. But if the Complainant has a lot of money he can harras and make the accused run from pillar to post for many years. In India if you are an accused under any law, you are ruined.
