The Supreme Court on Monday refused to suspend an Allahabad High Court order threatening to initiate contempt of court proceedings against top Uttar Pradesh bureaucrats and police officials for disobeying an order on irregularities in police recruitment.

A vacation bench of Justice Markandey Katju and Justice Deepak Verma refused to grant any relief to the Uttar Pradesh government on its lawsuit against the High Court's order, reports IANS.

It said that acceding to the government's request would jeopardise the outcome of entire lawsuits filed by dismissed police recruits.

The state government had requested that the High Court order be suspended.

The Allahabad High Court had earlier ordered the state government to distinguish between the genuine recruits to the police constabulary and those appointed through irregular means in 2006 during the government led by Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The High Court had ordered the appointment of genuine recruits after segregating them from the fake ones.
