In a remarkable endeavour in the history of Judiciary, around 2.84 lakh cases were disposed of in Punjab during the two-day Mega Lok Adalats known as Samadhan-2008.
Besides Punjab, the Mega lok Adalats were also held in adjoining Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. These were organised through the State Legal Services Authorities of the two states and the UT.
A satisfied Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chief Justice T S Thakur patted the judicial officers of Punjab for their efforts to settle maximum number of cases through mutual consensus over the last two days.
Addressing the media at the judicial complex, Chief Justice Thakur said approximately 2.84 lakh cases had been settled during the last two days in the Mega Lok Adalats organised at different places in Punjab. Claims, estimated to be around 387.56 crore, were settled through mutual Samadhan, he added.
In Ludhiana district alone, 56 Judicial Benches had been set up during the Mega Lok Adalats, he said. A fairly large number of revenue cases, which were pending in the courts of Punjab, were settled through mutual consent, he added.
Justice Thakur said besides the revenue cases there were cases of traffic chalans under the motor vehicle act which were fairly large in numbers. A number of pre-litigative cases were also taken up at the Mega Adalats and were settled, he added while listing out the nature of other cases that were settled.
Regarding leaving motor vehicle challan cases with the police rather than bringing them before courts, Justice Thakur said it was for the state to decide. The Lok Adalat is the best system for speedy and cheap justice as the normal procedure is long and costly, he added.
Admitting that a fairly large number of cases were pending in the High Court and the courts of Punjab and Haryana, Justice Thakur said that Lok Adalats are best mode of settling cases and easying the load on the judiciary. On the concept of Evening Courts, he observed that the Bar Associations must agree with this concept then only can the courts go ahead.
Regarding the Mobile Court concept which was started last year in two places in Punjab and Haryana, Justice Thakur said as of now there was no move to extend this to other places. He also said corruption in the judiciary would not be tolerated.
