Plea Filed In SC Seeking One Nation, One Penal Code

A plea has been filed in the Supreme Court which seeks that the Centre be directed to draft a comprehensive penal code to replace the current, 161 year old, colonial penal code. The plea has been filed by BJP leader and Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay. The plea also seeks that a Judicial Commission or an Expert Committee be formulated to deal with domestic and international cases of corruption crime. It also urged the Court to pass orders to improve India’s ranking in the Rule of Law Index and Corruption Perception Index.

Centre to Delhi HC: Engaging With States To Strengthen Child Protection For Children Orphaned During The COVID 19 Pandemic

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has informed the Delhi High Court that it has been conducting various meetings with the States to improve the situation of children who have been orphaned due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Initially, a PIL had been filed asking the Centre to safeguard the orphaned children from being trafficked as they had no one to look after them. The Ministry has filed an affidavit in this regard as a response to the said PIL. The matter has been currently listed for hearing before the Division Bench, which comprises Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh.

SC Dismisses Andhra Pradesh Govt's Plea To Quash Criminal Cases Related To Amravati Scam

The Supreme Court has dismissed the Andhra Pradesh Government’s SLP against the quashing of the criminal cases that had been filed in relation to the ‘insider trading’ at Amravati. The SLP was heard by the Bench composed of Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Vineet Saran. The case was of the State of Andhra Pradesh V. Chekka Guru Murali Mohan & Ors.

Delhi HC Seeks Response From CBI, ED On Bail Plea By Christian Michel

The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding the bail plea of Christian Michel, who is a middleman in the AgustaWestland chopper deal. The cases involved are Christian Michel V. CBI and Christian Michel V. ED. The notices have been issued by Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri. Michel is accused of legitimising illicit commissions received upon the procurement of the VVIP helicopters.

Bombay HC: Speedy Trial Is A Fundamental Right; Court Remarks While Hearing Father Stan Swamy's Bail Plea

The Bombay High Court has pointed out the delay in the conclusion of the trials that result in the accused languishing in prisons as an undertrial. It has been remarked by the Bench of Justice SS Shinde and Justice N J Jamadar that while the lawyers can argue and leave, it is the Judiciary that has to deal with the criticism. The case in question was the bail plea filed by Father Stan Swamy. It was also remarked by the Court that a speedy trial was also a Fundamental Right.
