Overview

  • On 08th of April, 2021, the Karnataka HC gave a green signal to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to begin with the ‘Doorstep School’ in Bengaluru city, for destitute children.

Background

  • A petition was filed by the Letzkit Foundation.
  • In this plea, the issue related to children where the children being forced to sell toys, flowers, etc. particularly at traffic junctions and also on the streets of Bengaluru was highlighted.

What is ‘Doorstep School’?

  • Advocate Sreenidhi V, the counsel of the corporation submitted a memo in the court giving details of the school.
  • It is a ‘Bus’ school in which around ten to fifteen children will be accommodated in a single bus while maintaining the required physical distance.
  • Each bus will have two teachers and one helper.
  • The timings of the school will be from 11:00 A.M to 01:00 P.M
  • Each bus will contain the necessary study material and a white board.
  • Mid-day meal will be provided to the children and each bus will also carry condiments like chocolate and biscuits. It will carry with it disposable water cans and use and throw cups along with it.

Court’s Order

  • The division comprised of Chief Justice Abhay Oka and Justice Suraj Govindaraj.
  • The honorable court gave the green signal to the initiative of ‘Doorstep School’ of BBMP for destitute children.
  • The bench said that the authorities should ensure that the rules regarding the social distancing and wearing of masks are strictly followed.
