OVERVIEW

Joining among other Hollywood celebrities like Rihanna and Susan Saradon extended their solidarity to the farmers in India with respect to their protests, many others in the
West are beginning to notice the happenings in India.

One of them is Trevor Noah of The Daily Show, in a segment titled If You Don't Know.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

The Emmy-winning presenter in his segment explained the origin of the farmers' protest, their demands, and subsequent global support the agitation has received.

The video is a condensed report that described the reason of the protest, government's actions towards it, and the violence that took place on January 26 at Red Fort.

The clip also mentioned the criticism faced by Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg, who had raised their voices in support of the farmers.

Thousands of farmers have been at the Delhi borders camping since November, looking for getting the three new agriculture laws that plan on putting an end to minimum support price (MSP) based procurement of crops like wheat and paddy by the government, in an attempt to implement privatisation in the farming sector.

Noah also observed the several rounds of talks between the unions and government proving to be inconclusive, and stated that putting a halt of 18 months would leave the situation stagnant and not get it solved.

The Ministry of External Affairs, after the tweets by international personalities, commented that facts should be ascertained before disclosing matters and commenting which is not accurate or responsible, especially when done by celebrities.

The comedian concluded the segment by saying that nobody is more patient than a farmer, the same workers ‘who wait for five months to grow an eggplant'.
