OVERVIEW

Disha Ravi, the twenty-two year-old climate activist has been arrested by the Delhi Police in the Toolkit case. She has been accused of sedition and conspiracy.

Her acquaintance has stated the activist is a kind person who does not believe in violence and her arrest implies a message to the young people.

Vineeth Vincent, a musician has also stated that she has been arrested because she is a soft target. She will be the poster girl so that the rest of the young people do not raise their voices.

WHAT IS THE BACKGROUND?

Disha Ravi is not only a climate activist, she is also one of the founding members of a group called ‘Fridays For Future India’.

She was arrested from her hometown Bengaluru and has been placed in police custody for five days by a Delhi Court.

The police have asserted that she had shared the “Toolkit” with Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen activist who tweeted it to show her support for protesting farmers.

She was also alleged to be the key conspirator behind the toolkit on the farmers’ protests that are continuing. Disha was also accused to be linked to groups that are pro-Khalistan.

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?

She was not properly represented in the court and this induced resentment among the people. Opposition parties and activists in the civil society have blamed the Delhi Police and the magistrate for her arrest too.

Non-bailable warrants have been issued by the Delhi Police against lawyer Nikita Jacob and Shantanu Muluk, an engineer with respect to the toolkit. The police have reported that two laptops and an iPhone were found with various incriminating documents at Jacob’s house.

Jacob and Muluk both have moved the Bombay High Court to seek anticipatory bail.
