OVERVIEW

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare during the Budget session informed the Lok Sabha that it will not reimburse the families of farmers who lost a member during the protests against farm laws.

The Central Government stated that they had on many occasions appealed to the farmers that children and elders including women should be sent home due to Covid situation and cold weather.

It was further said that they do not propose to end Minimum Support Price (MSP).

WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?

A batch of PILs looking for immediate removal of protesting farmers from Delhi-NCR borders is being heard by the SC. Petitions against the three agricultural laws are also being heard by the apex court.

The SC has ordered that the MSP system must be continued in the way as it existed before the laws were enacted so that no farmer be deprived of his title as a result of any action taken under the laws.

A committee has also been formed by the Supreme Court so that negotiations between the Centre and farmers can take place easily. The result of this has not yet been achieved smoothly, so the Apex Court has considered re-constitution of the Committee.

OTHER ISSUES RAISED

Questions related to deaths of farmers during the protest were also asked by the Lok Sabha to the Home Ministry. Almost 70 farmers lost their lives during the situation.

Nityan and Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs to this replied that police and public order are subjects that come under the State List according to the Seventh Schedule to the Constitution.

He further said that the Central Government ensures that activities of individuals and organizations are under vigilance if they bear on national security or public order, and actions are taken if necessary.
