WHAT IS THE RETAINED EU LAW IN THE UNITED KINGDOM?

• Before signing of the BREXIT deal (for Britain’s exit from the European Union), UK enforced laws made by EU domestically.

• However, after BREXIT with the European Union (Withdrawal) Act 2018, the UK is no longer obliged to follow the EU laws.

• However, yet, the UK has retained and allows some of the EU laws to continue to be in force even during the post-BREXIT period. These laws are called “Retained EU Laws”.

• These include EU laws which were directly followed in UK, and also those which were followed by enacting domestic legislations in the Country.

• The European Union is a group of 27 (after BREXIT) European Countries, that follow certain common set of laws, for mutual political and economic interests of the member States.

• UK has been desirous of making an exit from the EU since the David Cameron administration.

• Theresa May, the subsequent Prime Minister, resigned from her post after losing a vote in the Parliament on her deal for BREXIT.

• The present BREXIT deal was negotiated under the present Prime Minister Borris Johnson.
