With the Left parties and the BJP mounting fresh pressure, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said the govt will convene an all-party meeting after 20th March to find political consensus on the Women's Reservation Bill. "Time has come to make yet another effort" to build consensus on the Wormen's Reservation Bill, Singh said in the Rajya Sabha adding he would convene an all-party meeting after Parliament breaks for recess on 20th March in the current session. In identical replies in both the Houses of Parliament to Motion of Thanks on the President's Address, Singh said his government was committed to the reservation of seats in state legislatures and Parliament. Asked by CPI-M member Brinda Karat in the Upper House whether the government would bring the bill in the current session itself, the Prime Minister said, "I cannot say what will be the outcome of our efforts but I will make sincere efforts". He expressed "deep regret" for not moving forward despite commitment of his government on this front. "We have made, in the last three years, efforts to evolve a broad-based consensus. We have not succeeded and I admit that this a commitment in our Common Minimum Programme," he said in the Lok Sabha. With a key constituent of the UPA having reservation on the issue, the bill has been in a limbo for a long time.
