Govt to set up centralised offices for I-T notices, refunds New Delhi, March 1 (PTI) In order to reduce the interface between taxpayers and revenue officials, the government will soon introduce a centralised system for issuing notices and giving tax refunds. The income-tax department will be setting up 8-9 centres throughout the country to process the tax returns and issue notices and refunds to tax payers, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman R Prasad said at a post-Budget session organised by the Assocham today. A centralised system of processing tax returns, he said, will do away with the concept of jurisdiction of assessing officers which has been traditionally followed by the CBDT. Speaking on the occasion, Joint Secretary in the CBDT Arbind Modi said I-T returns would be processed in BPO type of operations at centres which are like to become operational in four to six months. The centralised system would also minimise the interface between the assessing officers and taxpayers, he said, adding the taxpayer could even be asked to submit written replies rather presenting himself before the revenue officials. Describing the 2008 Budget as "historic", Prasad said "never before the personal income-tax payers were given a relief of Rs 45,000 (for persons with income of Rs 5 lakh)". Pointing out that income tax collection in the years ahead will exceed the corporate tax realisation, he said, higher collection prompted the government to give big relief to tax payers, "elections is just by the way." The tax relief and other measures, including Rs 60,000 crore loan waiver to farmers, he added, would increase the demand for consumer goods and benefit the corporate sector.
