Safeguarding myself against a post dated cheque

Hi,

I am staying a rented apartment and going to vacate soon. Upon leaving the premises, the house owner must hand me over the security deposit.

Issue is that house owner is promising to give me a post-dated cheque and is trustworthy. But still I want to safeguard myself that he pays the dues. How do i safeguard myself? Would she/he declaring that settlement is done via cheque no xyz help?

regards

Post dated cheque is no security.
