how far is copying text from a book permitted

Dear Learned friends,

How much from a book can be copied while compiling another book.  Is there any stipulation regarding that. One sentance, one paragraph, one page etc.  Or every copying is subjective satisfaction of the court.

Sir,

As for as my knowledge goes, copying perse is not a problem untill you are using it for your personal use. But if it is used for commercial purpose then the words or the language used by you shall be different form that of the other. If you still want to take the text of the other author then it is better refer it as a footnote. All depends on as to what purpose it is being copied.

Regards,

Savanth

Mr. Savanth's answer seems proper.

To the extent of my understanding a fair use for the purpose of research or private study or criticism would not be deemed copyright infringement. Under the fair use doctrine you may be allowed to copy limited text to substantiate your point. It would be much safer to express the idea in your own words such that it does not amount to plagiarism, and cite the original work. There is no yard stick as to how much content can be copied. It is a fact based enquiry specific to individual case (both quality and quantity of text copied will be considered). In some cases even copying one sentence would be deemed infringing if it the most important sentence, and would prejudice the commercial value of the original work.

Dear Mr. Bobby,

Copying from a book to word / sentence / paragraph / page is not permitted. It means there is no provision to copy the contents with out the permission of author or publisher. There will not be any problem with personal use. However, if it used for commercial purpose, this will be serious copyright infringment.

If some body is using some portion of the text for fair use, then it can not be said that there is infrigement of copyright

If it is a scientific or technical book, including law, if what is copied is a generally known fact, no copyright infringement could have happened.
